The London Borough of Havering’s award winning catering service HES Catering Services is a finalist for the prestigious communications Campaign of the Year 2019 LGC Award. We were shortlisted for the award for our innovative Veggie Run app, and its ground-breaking effective communications campaign. The Veggie Run app is the first council-created app in England to educate children about healthy eating through gameplay. Councillor Robert Benham, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Learning and Education, said: “I am very proud that HES Catering Services has been recognised through the LGC Awards 2019 for developing such an innovative healthy living campaign for children.” The winners will be announced on 13 March 2019.

Head of Catering Operations Dennis Brewin, was one of a select group of invited speakers at the annual LACA Main Event. Dennis gave an 30 minute talk on or exciting “Veggie Run” app and how the  game has improved school meal uptakes within the borough by 14%, but also how it is educating children to the benefits of a healthy diet and physical activity.

The workshop was well received and we look forward to the next steps in the journey of “Veggie Run ” and the Crunch Bunch with some exciting new updates and additions to the App in the near future, so look out for further news regarding this award winning concept.
